Challenge title

Balancing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing employee commitment for more climate protection in the public administration.

Question

How can the GHG emissions in connection with work (e.g. workplace, mobility, commuting, catering) be balanced in a digital tool, made transparent for employees (keyword sensitization) in order to generate an increased commitment to climate-conscious action in the professional environment and made usable for internal controlling (anonymized)?

Challenge description

Development of a GHG calculator for integration into the municipal intranet to enable employees to recognize and also use their own potential for action. In addition to the pure presentation of personal GHG emissions, practical tips are to be given on which concrete behavior changes can lead to which savings. This should promote participation in “climate protection at work” and create synergy effects that can also have a positive impact in private life (employees are always private individuals too!).

Declared will to reduce operational GHG emissions to a climate-neutral or technically possible minimum with possible topic areas (Scope 1, 2 & 3): Buildings (electricity & heat demand), business & work travel (fleet management), workplace catering (canteens, out-of-home, self-catering, packaging in reusable/disposable, meat-based/low/no-meat diet, etc.).

If possible, the data should be processed for internal controlling in such a way that an anonymous evaluation can be used to draw conclusions about changes in behavior over time. In addition, the tool is to be maintained for at least 12 months in order to create a solid data basis for the development of further measures.

Vision / Expected Result

Implementation of the tool in the municipal intranet with motivation for voluntary and anonymous participation.

Data required: Work location (building data from the Office of Facility Management), workplace design with space & occupancy, IT equipment & furniture, mobility behavior on work and business trips, nutritional behavior.

Alternatively, home office: Assumption of an average workplace with no commuting, taking into account the city’s data protection guidelines.
